Barrel of Oil Equivalent

Barrel of oil equivalent (BOE) is the industry's common currency for expressing hydrocarbon volumes across different product types. Because a well may produce oil, associated gas, and natural gas liquids simultaneously, BOE provides a single number that aggregates all streams for reporting, analysis, and valuation purposes.

The 6:1 Conversion Ratio

The standard conversion is based on energy content:

6 Mcf of natural gas = 1 BOE

This ratio reflects the approximate BTU equivalence between one barrel of crude oil (~5.8 MMBtu) and 6,000 cubic feet of natural gas (~6 MMBtu). The conversion is a simplification — actual energy content varies with gas composition — but it is the universally accepted industry standard.

BOEPD vs. BOE

BOE refers to a volume (a total quantity). BOEPD (BOE per day) or BOE/d refers to a production rate. A well producing 200 BBL/d of oil and 600 Mcf/d of gas is producing 300 BOEPD (200 oil + 100 gas equivalent).

Important Caveat

BOE aggregation obscures the revenue difference between oil and gas. At $70/BBL oil and $2.50/Mcf gas, 1 BOE of oil generates $70 of revenue while 1 BOE of gas equivalent (6 Mcf) generates only $15. Operators producing primarily gas will have significantly lower revenue per BOE than oil-weighted peers — always check the oil/gas split when comparing BOE production figures.
